Golf Grip Why Strong is Wrong

So many people over the years have stressed the importance of the neutral grip. This tip finally explains why you need to do it.

You cannot have loose wrists if you have a strong grip. In other words, building a powerful, effortless, pain-free golf swing starts with the grip.

If you are looking to learn this type of swing then start paying particular attention to the grip. This means you take your time and learn perfect placement of your hands on the club. Yes, this will feel uncomfortable. Yes, you will hit some bad shots but if a powerful, effortless, pain-free golf swing starts with the grip then keep doing it.

Too many people want to go right back to their old grip because it give them a powerful, comfortable feeling. Like I said, you need a neutral grip to even get this effortless golf swing. So start seeing it differently and understand why you need certain fundamentals in your swing. Once you do you will see the benefit in no time.

The perfect golf swing is not just in the shoulders or the arms. The way your wrists release during your golf swing can have a major impact on the ball. So, how do the wrists release in the golf swing?

If you don’t release the swing at the wrists just right, you may end up with a slice. This is what most beginners, and quite a few pros, often do. Of all the culprits that might be ruining your game, you may not think to blame those harmless old wrists. Let’s take a look at the way you release that swing…

Perfect Timing Means Perfect Results

Here’s the perfect release:

Make a good backswing turn. As you start your swing, shift your weight to your left foot, the forward foot of your swing. As you swing, you unwind, starting with your legs and torso, then moving on to your shoulders and arms.

But wait a minute! Keep those wrists locked up. Until the very last part of the downswing, keep those wrists locked. Then, let them go and watch that ball fly.

Wait!!! Not Yet!

Most golfers release their wrists too soon in the swing. You just can’t wait to send that ball flying, so you start to swing your shoulders and arms down too early, instead of letting it start naturally with the torso. You end up swinging the club down and then you have to release the wrists in the middle of that downswing.

You’ve really got to wait until the final nanosecond of the downswing to let the wrists go. The timing is something that you have to work on. You shouldn’t have to force it; if you let yourself unwind just right, your wrists will know when to release.

Usually, when you release your wrists too early, you end up hooking the ball. If you get lots of hooking, you should take a closer look at your wrist release.

What Happened?

Some golfers don’t release the wrists at all. This is most often due to nerves, or trying to force the ball right into the target area. You might be uncertain of your shot, and this will make your shot stiff and frozen. It sounds bad, but even very good golfers do this.

If you don’t release the wrist at all, or not enough, you’ll end up hitting the ball much shorter than you intended to. You probably will be closer to your intended target, but you’ll lose yards and yards on it.

Get It Right!

Here’s a good tip for you when you’re practicing: Relax. Let all that tension go. Being nervous about your shot is the number one cause of improper wrist release. Twist your body, put your weight on your forward foot, and do it. It should be a natural motion, and you just can’t be natural with it if you’re whole body is tense.

Here’s another way to think about it: You are using the rotational force of your body. Black belts in karate rotate their torsos in the same way to add power to their punch.

Getting the right wrist release is a Zen thing; it happens when you don’t think about it. Sound esoteric? Sorry about that! Put another way, you shouldn’t have to consciously release your wrists. If you twist your body just right and let the natural rotation do its thing, your wrists will know when to go.

A good grip, a good set up, a natural swing and you don’t have to do anything at all. Just let those wrists go!

Golf Grip Right Hand Placement

In this video I talk about the right hand of the golf grip, or the bottom hand of the grip. This is a very tough thing to achieve. It will feel very weak and very awkward but in the long run it will increase your consistency and distance. This will of course in turn lower your scores and that is never a bad thing. The correct golf grip is key to having a better game.

Over the many years of my teaching I have found that this is usually the one area that everybody needs help with and that not many people have the proper golf grip. When working on something like this it takes perseverance. It will feel bad for a couple of weeks, this is your only connection to the golf club.

The golf grip is key to achieving lower scores. The right hand needs to be in a neutral to weak position. Out of the three knuckle sections of your fingers, the club needs to be held in the middle or second knuckle section. Then try to cover your top hand thumb with you palm of your lower hand.

This way your golf swing will be freer and easier to make good solid contact with the ball. After looking at many student’s grips, not many people have the club in a good position. If you want to achieve a better grip, play better golf and lower your score then this tip is critical for you.

The right hand golf grip will determine the clubface angle. When you start to change the face angle this can make it very difficult to hit straight shots. With hitting crooked shots, this then can make golf a very tough sport. If you want to become a better player this is the first step in becoming one. Not many good players have a bad grip. Keep working on this and you in turn will be on the road to becoming a better player.

Figuring your own golf grip size is a very important step in forwarding and improving your game.

Too thin or too thick can yield many problems.and that’s why choosing the correct grip size for your golf swing and hand size is crucial. But as with nearly everything in golf, testing what feels good for you could really improve your golf consistency and help you lower scores.

If you have golf grips that are too small, your hands can get fidgety and it can mean that they won’t allow the hands to work as they ideally should in the golf swing. This has been clear that inconsistency, greater shot dispersion, and typically too early a release of the club that can cause in a hook or pull.

If your grips are too thick, your hands won’t be able to release effectively at impact and the most likely result will be a block, push or slice.

Getting better at golf and improving your overall game is something you can do by embracing a few key tips, tricks and techniques and correct golf grip size is one of them.
