Although all golf rangefinders have one common task, which is to provide you with distance measurements to your desired goals on the golf course, how accurate they are at achieving these results and how easy they are to use can vary importantly from one rangefinder to another.

To help you work out how to choose a golf rangefinder, so you can find one that will match your needs and produce results for you on the course, I have listed below, some of the key things that you might want to consider, before making your purchasing decision. Apart from price, one of the first things you should consider is what you are going to be using your rangefinder for.

If you want to use it in competitions or for tournament play then you will need to make sure that you buy a Tournament Legal Golf Rangefinder. These are the only type of rangefinders that are deemed to be legal for tournament play (under local rule) because they provide line-of-sight distance measurements only.

The other types of golf rangefinders are called Slope Editions which are not allowed to be used in competitions or tournament play because they provide more advanced features like adjusted yardage measurements that take into account the angle of slope, weather conditions and altitude, some even make club selection easier by offering suggestions on which club to take for your next shot.

So just remember that should only buy a Slope Edition Rangefinder if you are only going to use it for training and practicing purposes or for playing casual golf with your friends. If you want to use it in competitions then as the golf rules stand at the moment you will have to buy a Tournament Edition.

Another important factor to consider when choosing a golf rangefinder is what is their maximum distance range? And how accurate are they? Maximum distance ranges can be anything from 500 yards to well over 1,000 yards away, and are typically accurate to with +/- 1 yard, although some of the latest models can be accurate to within 6 inches.

What you need to remember is that this accuracy and maximum distance ranges have been tested under optimal weather conditions and with large, smooth and reflective targets, so to be safe it is probably best to half that figure in you head, unless you are lucky enough to be playing in perfect weather conditions all of the time!

Other factors you should consider include, size and weight, magnification capability, how easy they are to use and whether you are more comfortable with a horizontal and vertically-orientated golf rangefinder.

As a golf instructor I was always a bit dubious of Golf Simulators, they did not really convert what was happening in real life. For example I hit my drives around 300 yrds but every time I tried a simulator it was only going 230 yrds! How could that be realistic? After all we just want to be able to repeat what we do on the course.

I was not aware of the differences between golf simulators until I was fortunately enough to visit the Spanish Golf Open in Seville in May 2010. I met a lovely guy Haris who was there with a golf simulator from his company. He explained that the system he uses has two high speed cameras work simultaneously at separate 90 degree angles that creates the world's most accurate 3 dimensional ball flight model. The micro cameras utilize high quality CMOS sensors, capturing up to 1,000 frames per second produced at 60Hz. With each powerful lens producing a wide telephoto angle of view, capturing multiple images of the ball from impact, through the air and towards the screen. Tracking the golf ball very accurately in up to 30 separate positions, from original strike point for 3m or 10 feet of the ball flight. Whilst the golf club is also tracked for 0.6m or 2 feet, before impact on the follow through.

This enables the simulator software to exactly mirror the golfer's ball flight and swing performance. The overhead high speed camera tracks the ball from impact and alerts the software that the ball has been hit. At the same time it records the exact data relating to the horizontal launch angle, club speed, ball spin, swing path and face angle relative to the target line. This camera is also used for putting when the software is in putting mode. The data is sent at high speed via a USB2 interface to the computer's enhanced host controller, enabling the software to instantly produce the 3 dimensional ball flight. The side high speed camera constantly tracks the golf ball from impact as it travels towards the screen. Accuracyively measuring the vertical launch angle, the ball speed and the ball spin to the point that all bad and good shots are registered producing the very highest of lobs. In game play or practice, the choice of using a wedge or a seven iron from off the green illustrates this performance of producing the shots and trajectory you would expect to see. The ball speed is so accurately measured to produce the carry of the ball through the air. Again the data is sent to the computer through a high speed USB2 port connection using a 2nd host controller, so that the information is immediately analyzed and not affected by the data from the overhead camera.

Wow! That told me! I had a go on the simulator and found out to my surprise how accurate the ball flight and distance was, I have only used the ones which rely on clubhead speed, and I ended up trying to smash the ball so hard to get any kind of distance. This lead to a loss of form and structure, with the simulator that I was able to swing normally with good tempo and my regular distance, sometimes out hitting it !! So if you are looking for a simulator for an event make sure you visit the link below, great simulator and great guys!
