Golf is an elitist game and the reason is not hard to fathom because it has always been played by the royalty and the corporate captains.

Golf when it was started was a game of the rich to relax and enjoy the sun. That lead to mushrooming of golf clubs and the entry to these clubs was very much limited to few people. In fact a lot of people who joined the club were only called by invitation to join the club. This was done to maintain the high standards of club and preserve the culture of the club.

The other reason being that society in the earlier times was also fragmented and that meant that golf became a game of the rich and the famous. That is true still in a lot of countries. Although the trend id changing.

The other reason being that if you want to play a game of golf you need equipment and that equipment is costly. The cost of golf clubs, golf balls, and even the clothing and the shoes is very high and that has meant that people only with high income or businessman can take to the game.

This trend has been reversed now because of the fact that there are things available on rental if you are really interested in playing the game. Plus if you have the talent there is a lot of company sponsorships available and you can win big prize money in golf tournaments. Television as a medium has played a great role in popularizing the sport and also getting rid of the idea that golf is an elitist game.

Polo is another game which is in the same cadre and it is also considered elitist and that has yet to break those barriers between elite and the common man playing the game.

The mushrooming of golf clubs everywhere has also made sure that you can play the game of golf wherever you want and whenever you want. These clubs allow you to play the game as for a few hours and they also offer membership for some months. But make no mistake if you want to get an entry into an elite club they still have strict rules about who can be a members as well as the waiting period can be years for some clubs.

Gradually although the barrier has been reduced considering with players like Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh breaking that motion to a large extent.
