Your "Must Play" Golf List

If you've been coming to Myrtle Beach and playing golf for a long time you've probably just about everything worth playing, so you would think. If you do not mind taking a full day, and who does not when it comes to golf, for just a short drive from Myrtle Beach you can play one of the truly great sea side courses in the Carolinas, Bald Head Island Country Club . Bald Head was designed by renamed architect George Cobb and recently rennovated in 2010 by Tim Cate. Over the years the course had lost some of its original design and luster and Cate has restored it all and then some.
Last week we were invited to play Bald Head and in my opinion this course is right up there with anything at Sea Island, GA or Kiawah Island with the exception of the Ocean course. We played it from the tips on an overcast and windy day. The course was difficult at 6800 yards with the winds coming of the ocean. Each hole is set apart from the other to give you the feeling of being out there alone. The course was cut through marshland and a maritime forest so each hole is framed with danger for the wayward shot. I loved the ruggedness of the layout much like the Ocean course at Kiawah. There are five sets of tees so choose wisely especially if the wind is blowing. We did not choose wisely and got a beat-down from the back tees. If you're not striking it solid in that wind you're done. That being said the course was such great shape and the surroundings were so spectacular that you do not really care how you hit the ball it was just great being out there. OK, that last part was a lie. I hate getting all fired up to play a great course like this and then I swing the club like I have an ax in my hand chopping it from one end of the course to the other.
This is a whole day trip. I drive from Pawleys Island, SC to Southport, NC and it took exactly 2 hours. You take a 30 minute ferry ride to the island then they shuttle you to the club. The cost of the round includes the ferry ride and play is limited and booked through Ambassador Golf (800-882-0684). Everything is first class from the clubhouse to the practice facility. It was well worth the four hours I spent driving to play a course of this caliber. I just wished I would have left the ax at home!

The Golf Lesson Paradox

Would you purchase anything without a guarantee? Whether it’s a personal grooming product or exercise equipment, we want some kind of assurance before clicking the PayPal button.
The warranty terms may vary from twenty-four hours to thirty days, but the basic premise is, that as long as we follow the terms outlined in the promotional literature, our satisfaction is guaranteed.
Is it possible to offer a money-back guarantee for golf lessons? In most sports, we see glimpses of improvement immediately. This reinforces our belief in the validity of the instructors advice.
Golf instruction is unique – there are no guarantees.
Do you believe that you have to get worse before you get better? Why pay someone to show you how to play worse? This prevailing attitude is hardly conducive to parting with your hard-earned cash.
Based on my teaching experience over the past thirty years, I’ve come to the conclusion that most students regard golf lessons as a weakness; it’s downright embarrassing to admit (to yourself and golfing buddies), that you can’t figure out how to correct the chronic slice that keeps coming back every year.
Why do the majority of average golfers forego professional instruction and struggle with self-analysis in the hope of finding a “cure”?
Let’s look at a common misconception regarding the value of professional instruction.
Misconception Number One: Improving versus Eliminating
One of the biggest roadblocks to improvement is the belief that a recurring problem can be permanently “fixed”. The golf swing will always be a work in progress. Every one of us has natural tendencies that continue to re-appear, regardless of how hard we work to eliminate them. The value of lessons is understanding how to reduce the severity of the problem.
What should you expect from one lesson?
The majority of once-a-week golfers struggle with a chronic slice, which invariably leads to one or more penalty strokes.
If you can learn how to hit the fairway fifty percent of the time, then the lesson was productive. Now you have the tools to continue to improve. The primary goal is to keep the ball in play.
Expecting to completely eliminate a recurring slice in one lesson is unfair to you and the instructor. The golf swing will always be a work in progress. In the next article, we look at another common misconception that creates a stigma around professional instruction for the once-a-week golfer.
