Golf Grip Right Hand Placement

In this video I talk about the right hand of the golf grip, or the bottom hand of the grip. This is a very tough thing to achieve. It will feel very weak and very awkward but in the long run it will increase your consistency and distance. This will of course in turn lower your scores and that is never a bad thing. The correct golf grip is key to having a better game.

Over the many years of my teaching I have found that this is usually the one area that everybody needs help with and that not many people have the proper golf grip. When working on something like this it takes perseverance. It will feel bad for a couple of weeks, this is your only connection to the golf club.

The golf grip is key to achieving lower scores. The right hand needs to be in a neutral to weak position. Out of the three knuckle sections of your fingers, the club needs to be held in the middle or second knuckle section. Then try to cover your top hand thumb with you palm of your lower hand.

This way your golf swing will be freer and easier to make good solid contact with the ball. After looking at many student’s grips, not many people have the club in a good position. If you want to achieve a better grip, play better golf and lower your score then this tip is critical for you.

The right hand golf grip will determine the clubface angle. When you start to change the face angle this can make it very difficult to hit straight shots. With hitting crooked shots, this then can make golf a very tough sport. If you want to become a better player this is the first step in becoming one. Not many good players have a bad grip. Keep working on this and you in turn will be on the road to becoming a better player.

Figuring your own golf grip size is a very important step in forwarding and improving your game.

Too thin or too thick can yield many problems.and that’s why choosing the correct grip size for your golf swing and hand size is crucial. But as with nearly everything in golf, testing what feels good for you could really improve your golf consistency and help you lower scores.

If you have golf grips that are too small, your hands can get fidgety and it can mean that they won’t allow the hands to work as they ideally should in the golf swing. This has been clear that inconsistency, greater shot dispersion, and typically too early a release of the club that can cause in a hook or pull.

If your grips are too thick, your hands won’t be able to release effectively at impact and the most likely result will be a block, push or slice.

Getting better at golf and improving your overall game is something you can do by embracing a few key tips, tricks and techniques and correct golf grip size is one of them.

There are two ways your wrist can hinge, or cock, in the backswing. Every golfer does it one particular way. To get the most out of your swing, you have to hinge them both ways, which few recreational golfers do.

Hold your hand together in front of you, palms and fingers touching as if in a praying posture. Now hinge your wrists directly up toward you, so your fingers point straight up in the sky. That’s the first way to hinge your wrists, and that’s the one very golfer does. It’s the way you would hinge your wrists if you were chopping wood by lifting the axe straight over your head and swinging it back down.

Put your hands in the starting position again and hinge your wrists to the right and left, so each hand is alternately folding back on itself. That’s the second way, which is the way recreational golfers should learn how to do. It’s the way you would hinge your wrist if you were hitting a forehand shot in tennis.

The reason this is important is that allowing your right wrist to hinge backwards on the backswing preserves the square alignment of the clubface you had at address by preserving the angle your left wrist had at address. The right arm folds on the backswing and if the right wrist does not fold backwards with it, the left wrist is forced to hinge backwards, taking the clubface out of alignment. Then you would have to make a correction on the downswing to square up the clubface, and that is awfully hard to do consistently.

Learning how to hinge the right wrist takes a drill and a mirror. The drill will teach you the new movement and how it feels. The mirror will let you make sure you’re doing it right, because what needs to happen takes place behind your back. Remember while you’re doing all this that letting the right wrist bend backwards is an effect, not a cause. You don’t deliberately hinge it back; it is something that happens by itself when you take the club back correctly.

Take your grip on the club and hold it out in front of you. Notice the amount of bend there is in the left wrist. Now swing your shoulders and arms around so your hands are in about the place in space they get to at the top of your backswing and do not let the amount of bend in the left wrist change. You will find that your right wrist bent backwards. That is what you’re looking for. That’s the wrist hinge you want to add to your swing.

Stand with your mirror to your right, and swing to the top of your backswing, keeping the left wrist as it was at address and letting the right wrist hinge backward. It’s really not hard to do, but if you haven’t been hinging the right wrist, it will feel quite strange. Practice this every day until it you get accustomed to the feeling, and keep checking in the mirror to make you sure you’re doing it right.

The payoff comes in the downswing. As you start down, maintain this right wrist hinge until the momentum of your swing forces it to release. That will happen when the hands get about hip height. When the right wrist unhinges, the right hand comes into the ball providing effortless power and real accuracy.

Reverse Overlap Putting Grip

Learning how to putt begin with the putting grip. If you are experiencing problems with your putting game then a grip change maybe what you need. Although there are a variety of putting grip styles used today by both professionals and amateurs alike the most popular is the reverse overlap grip. I believe this grip is the most fundamentally solid of the choices available and would highly recommend it to new golfers.

To form the Reverse Overlap Grip:

(1) Begin by placing both hands on the club so they are facing each other and then move your right hand down the shaft roughly three inches.
(2) The putter should lay below the back pad of your left hand.
(3) The back side of your hands should be parallel to each other.
(4) Extend your right thumb down the shaft to a little below the right index finger.
(5) Your left thumb will also point down the club and slip into the palm of the right hand.
(6) Now position your left middle finger so it overlaps the little finger of your right hand.
(7) Finally take your left index finger and lay it across the tops of your right hand ring, middle and index fingers.

The benefit of this grip style is that it forms a solid unity to your hands, The hands are positioned very close together which enables them to work as a complete unit. Although this grip style will not eliminate your wrists from flexing, it does help prevent either one of your hands from becoming to dominating.

In terms of putting grip pressure the lighter you are able to grip the club the better. With applying lighter grip pressure you will have less tension and have a better feel of the club face. Basically you should apply just enough pressure to maintain control. On the practice green experiment with different pressure levels to find which one suits you the best. On a final note, whatever grip pressure you do use you should maintain that pressure evenly out your swing.

Professional golfers do use different grips in putting and periodically will make a change in their grip. However when they do make a change they have a clear understanding of the new grip style and that it will take them time to fully adapt to the change. Likewise, if you decide to make a change realize it takes plenty of time until you can feel comfortable and realize the benefits.
